Safety Syringes
Needlestick Prevention Safety Regulations
Regulations on the prevention of sharps injuries introduced are well established in the USA (Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act 2000) and the European Union (EU Directive 2010/52/EU 2013) and require employers to protect their staff against the risk of needlestick injury from exposed needles or sharps. This has resulted in the emergence of many needle protected safety designs across a wide range of medical products. More recently focus has extended to providing these types of safety products not just in the acute care setting but also in the home environment where patients, carers and relatives are potentially at risk of needlestick injuries. At Owen Mumford Pharmaceutical Services we believe that providing both patient safety and compliance with these directives is key.
Prefilled Safety Syringes for Subcutaneous Injection
With the rise of chronic conditions that require treatment by subcutaneous injection such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohns’ disease, many of these procedures are now taking place in the home environment. Medication delivery using a prefilled syringe is common practice and these are increasingly designed with needle protection safety features.
Key Attributes in Safety Syringe Design
- Passive safety design ensuring the needle is shielded automatically following the normal injection procedure with no user additional steps
- Robust needle protection to ensure the needle is fully encased and protected through to disposal
- Prevention of syringe plunger removal to avoid reuse, drug spillage and wastage
- Intuitive design aligned to normal injection procedure
UniSafe® Safety Device for Prefilled Syringes
UniSafe® safety device for prefilled syringes has been designed to use a minimum number of components to provide a simple and unintimidating product for patients and a simple product for the pharmaceutical industry to integrate into their manufacturing processes. Key to the design in order to ensure a safe product was enabling automatic or passive deployment of the needle shielding safety mechanism. UniSafe®’s safety shroud, which fully encases the needle, is automatically positioned as the user completes the injection procedure. No additional steps are required, and the procedure is the same as usual injection technique with a syringe. This helps to ensure that the patient can focus on their injection and still be protected from potential sharps injury.
